Blogging was once regarded as the plaything of the technically savvy or the obsession of the social networking generation, but can it be useful to writers?

Blogging has become a sort of sub-culture that was quickly assimilated by certain groups of people. Small business owners, corporate giants and social networking junkies have all claimed a piece of the blogosphere’s pie, but what about freelance writers?

A number of writers have embraced the technology as an extension of the craft, but others sit on the sidelines seemingly unconvinced about the type of benefits freelancers can reasonably expect from blogging.

The following are some of the best reasons for writers to maintain a blog.

Blogs Help Writers to Perfect a Style

Blogging is not just a means pushing information out into cyberspace; it also gives the writer a decent return on the time spent by helping to hone writing skills. After all, blogging is writing. Contributing to a blog is therefore a great way to get some practice while developing a personal style.

Writing Consistently on a Specific Topic is a Great Way to Become an Expert

The best blogs are focused on a specific niche. This means that the blogger has to know or at least get to know a great deal about the chosen topic. Consistently contributing to a blog is therefore a good way of becoming an expert while gaining recognition from the industry as well.

Blogging Makes Writers More Accessible

Online freelance writers, although more accessible than those who write for traditional print publications, are not as available as bloggers. The nature of a blog is interactive, which means that readers are invited and encouraged to leave comments and to contact the blogger with questions and insight. This opens up a communication channel that is not common in the world of freelance writing. Even though freelancers often mention email contact information in the resource box provided there is no open invitation to contact them and more importantly a response is not expected. Blogging however brings the writer within the reach of the readership and this level of relationship can be beneficial to both parties.

What Writer Couldn’t Use Another Source of Income?

Blogs can also be used as a source of income. Blogs make money for writers in the following ways;

  • They can be used as a means of promotion for the work of the writer by providing links to other online articles.
  • They can be used to sell e-books or other merchandise produced by the writer.
  • It can be monetized by selling ad space directly or through Google Adsense or other advertisement generating software.

All writers should get familiar with blogging, because the benefits are simply too numerous to deny.

I would make some blogs a part of academic curricula.

All the points are right on the money. In response to previous comment, I am doing a PGCE Further Education course (teacher training) and we have to blog as part of it.
