Most people know that there are peak seasons for travel and during these times tickets and even accommodation tend to be much more expensive than at quieter times of the year. But this theory applies to every other possible purchase as well. The trick to scoring big bargains on everything you buy lies in figuring out the off-season for the item in question.
A few popular expense categories are examined below to highlight when is the best time to buy and when it may be better to sit and wait it out.
Real Estate
If you are looking for a bargain in the real estate market, you might have better luck in winter than during the spring or summer. The winter months usually usher in a slower period of sales and homes that have been on the market for the previous months may start to give way to some price negotiation. It may not be the ideal time to venture out to view homes but this is exactly why you are likely to find your diamond in the rough when the weather starts to get colder.
Household Appliances
Holiday weekends are notoriously great times to shop for household appliances. Appliance merchants generally choose to wait for holidays like President's Day, Columbus Day or Thanksgiving to pull out the really great deals. If you can hold out until a major holiday you might get that refrigerator for a bargain price.
Air Conditioners
It is generally smarter to shop for your air conditioner during the cool months when sales naturally take a dip. This way you can take advantage of discounts put on simply to boost sales. So although you might think that you have time to put off replacing your unit it may be better to get it while it's still cold.
Clothing
If you are not bound by the rules of the fashion industry and you don't feel the need to sport this season's color or version of the latest trend, you can score huge bargains by waiting until basic items go on clearance to make room for fresh designer looks. The best deals coincide with fashion weeks in February and September.
Computers
Computer and laptop manufacturers generally churn out new technology at a mind boggling pace, so you can get great deals on a system with specifications that are just under the most recent release. Technology companies tend to save their really huge releases for July and August when schools are about to close so you can find deals then.
Groceries
Your local supermarket may have a special day when certain items go on sale, or when they offer double points for shopping and it might make sense to take advantage of these deals. Also if you are into coupon clipping you may want to wait until Sunday when your new coupon book comes in the paper and you can take advantage of new weekly deals.
By manipulating when you make your purchase you can save a little at a time, but over the course of the year can add up to substantial amounts of money.
