Maximize Lap Child Policy
Most airlines allow one infant per paying adult to fly for free or at a drastically reduced cost. Every airline is different though so you shouldn't take it for granted that this policy applies, or that the terms are the same across the board. For instance, most airlines class a child under the age of two as an infant but this is not a rule adopted by the entire industry so again, it pays to check before you book your flight or you may need to cough up the extra cash when you get to the counter to board your flight. Although you may think you’ll want to get a separate seat for your child most babies prefer to be close to their parents anyway so they may end up leaving the seat you paid for empty in favor of your lap, so it makes sense to save that extra money and put it towards something else.
Pack as Little as Possible
You might be thinking “Yeah right, like that’s possible when traveling with a baby!” but it can actually be done. Instead of packing diapers and formula for the entire duration of the trip, make sure you can pinpoint a drugstore or pharmacy to restock once you get to your destination. This not only means you don’t have to lug an extra bag around when you have to hold your baby, it also means you don’t have to pay for that extra bag.
Research All Fees Beforehand
Traveling by plane is not what it used to be. Once upon a time not so long ago you could expect to see a movie and have an in-flight meal all for free, but with the rising costs of fuel all airlines have had to find ways to stay in business and this means trimming the fat. It also means you now have to pay for what you once got for free, including entertainment and snacks for your toddler. There may also be baggage fees, fees for buying your ticket at the counter, fees for checking in online, fees for choosing a seat or even fees for bags that are overweight. You can save a bundle by being aware of what you can be charged for and then adapting to the rules.
Look for Accommodation Where Kids Stay Free
Finally, you can save lots of money by choosing a location where your kids can stay for free. There are even hotels or resorts that let kids eat for free so you don’t need to worry about picky eating habits on your vacation.
There are lots of ways to cut costs when you are traveling with your baby. All you need to do is think ahead and then do your research so you can make the best decisions for your trip.
